Size the pump to your real water need and your water source, not to a round number that feels safe, because under PM-KUSUM the benchmark and your share rise sharply with HP, so an oversized pump costs you much more out of pocket. The capacity depends on three things: how much water your crop and area need, the depth from which you lift the water (a deep bore needs more power for the same flow), and the yield of your bore (a weak bore cannot feed a big pump anyway). A small plot with a shallow water table may need only a 2 or 3 HP pump, while a larger area with a deep bore may need 5 HP or more. There is also the choice of surface versus submersible depending on whether you draw from an open well or a deep bore, and AC versus DC systems. The PM-KUSUM portal and the empanelled vendor will help match the HP to your situation, and it is wise to match it to a drip or efficient system rather than flood, so a smaller pump does the job. Tell the vendor your bore depth and yield and your area; confirm the benchmark cost for that HP and your share on your state PM-KUSUM portal before applying.

People oversize and regret the share they pay. I matched my pump to my drip and a 3 HP runs my plot fine. Do not buy more HP than your bore can feed.

My bore is deep so I needed more HP for the same water. Depth matters as much as area. Tell the vendor the exact depth.
