Drip or sprinkler, which one should I choose for my crop?

Choosing between drip and sprinkler based on crop type and spacing, water saving, and suitability.

The choice mostly follows your crop and how it is spaced. Drip suits row and widely spaced crops where you want water and fertiliser delivered right at the root zone: cotton, sugarcane, banana, fruit orchards, tomato, chilli, onion, and most vegetables. It gives the highest water saving, lets you do fertigation, and keeps the area between rows dry which cuts weeds. Sprinkler suits close growing or broadcast crops that cover the whole ground and have shallow spread out roots, such as wheat, groundnut, pulses, mustard, and many fodder crops, where wetting the full surface is what you want. Sprinklers are usually cheaper to install per acre than close spaced drip and are good on undulating land, but they lose more to evaporation and wind and you cannot do precise fertigation. As a rule of thumb: if you can run a lateral along a defined crop row, lean drip; if the crop blankets the field, lean sprinkler. Both are covered under PMKSY micro irrigation subsidy. Confirm the current subsidy rate for each and the empanelled vendors on your state portal, and ask a vendor to design for your specific crop spacing before deciding.

I use drip for cotton and sprinkler for my wheat and groundnut. Different crops, different tools. Do not force one system on everything.

On windy days my sprinkler wastes water and the spread is uneven. If you are in a windy belt factor that in.
