Hybrid vs OPV vs desi seed, which one should I choose?

Dealers push hybrid seed but it is costly and I cannot keep it for next year. How do I decide between hybrid, OPV and desi seed?

Each type has a place; the right choice depends on your budget, market and whether you want to save seed. Hybrid (F1) seed usually gives the highest yield and uniformity but is the most expensive, and you must buy fresh every season because saved hybrid seed segregates and gives poor, mixed results in the next crop. Open pollinated varieties (OPV) yield a bit less than top hybrids but you can save and re-use your own seed for a few years if you keep it isolated and clean, which lowers your seed cost. Desi or local landraces may yield less but are often hardy, suited to your soil and weather, good for low-input or organic farming, and valued for taste or special markets. A practical approach is hybrid where the market pays for high yield and quality and you can afford the seed, OPV where you want to save seed and reduce cost, and desi for marginal land, organic systems or niche markets. Confirm which varieties perform locally with your KVK before deciding.

I learned the hard way that saved hybrid seed is useless. The next crop was all sizes and shapes. Now hybrid only as fresh buy.

For my rainfed plot the desi variety survives dry spells better than the costly hybrid my neighbour grows. Lower yield but lower risk too.
