I keep hearing farmers can sell online to companies now. How does selling produce online to a company or processor actually work and is it reliable?

Selling online to companies happens through a few channels. eNAM lets distant buyers and processors bid for your lot online once it is assayed at your mandi. Separately, several agri marketplace and aggregator apps connect farmers or FPOs to bulk buyers, processors and exporters, where you list quantity and grade and the platform arranges a buyer, quality check, logistics and payment. Large food companies also run direct procurement or buyback programmes where they source specific crops at agreed quality. The reliable ones share a clear price, quality standard, weighment method and payment timeline in writing before you commit. The risks to watch are platforms that take produce but delay payment, vague quality rejection clauses, and middlemen posing as company agents. Start with a small lot to test a new buyer, insist on a written agreement or purchase order, and prefer selling as a group through your FPO so you have weight in any dispute. Verify the buyer or platform is genuine before sending produce, ideally through your FPO or local agriculture office.

We listed our maize through an app via our FPO. First deal was small to test them, payment came on time, then we scaled up. Do not send a full truck to a new buyer blindly.

Be careful of people on phone claiming to be from a big company. A real buyer gives a written purchase order and proper quality terms.
