What can I grow on saline problem soil where normal crops fail?

On saline soil you should choose salt tolerant crops and keep improving the soil at the same time, rather than forcing in sensitive crops that keep failing. Among field crops, barley is one of the most salt tolerant cereals, and mustard, safflower, cotton, sugar beet and some forage grasses also tolerate moderate salinity better than wheat or pulses. There are salt tolerant paddy varieties bred for coastal and saline tracts if you have water for rice. Among the worst affected are most pulses and many sensitive vegetables, so go easy on those until the soil improves. Alongside crop choice, work on the soil by applying gypsum where a soil test recommends it, adding organic matter and green manure, providing drainage so salts can leach down, and using good quality irrigation water if available. First get a soil test for EC and pH so you know how saline and whether it is also sodic, because the treatment differs. Take the test report to your local KVK or a soil testing lab and let them recommend the exact crops, varieties and amendment dose for your land.
