Can an NRI inherit farm land in India?

Yes. Even though an NRI cannot buy agricultural land, an NRI is allowed to inherit it. You can inherit agricultural land, a farm house, or plantation property from a person who was a resident of India, and in many cases also from another NRI who had themselves acquired it as per the rules in force at that time. Inheritance can be through a will or through normal succession when there is no will. To get the land in your name you will usually need the death certificate, legal heir certificate or succession certificate, the will (if any), and then a mutation in the land records at the local revenue or tehsil office. The land continuing as agricultural land in your name as an heir is fine. Selling it later has its own rules, especially on who you can sell to and on moving the money abroad.
