How to add my name to jointly held family land in the record?

Our land is in my grandfather's name and is held jointly by the family. I want my name added as a co-holder for my share. How is this done?

Getting your name added depends on how you have a right in the land. If your grandfather is alive, your name can be added only if he transfers a share to you by a registered gift deed or sale deed, after which you apply for mutation to add your name. If your grandfather has passed away, then you and the other heirs get your shares by inheritance, and an inheritance mutation (varasat) will enter the names of all legal heirs as co-holders. If it is ancestral coparcenary property, you may already have a birthright as a coparcener, but recording it cleanly still needs the proper mutation, and ideally a family settlement or partition document signed by all. The practical steps are: first establish your legal basis (gift, inheritance or partition), get the supporting document, then apply for mutation at the tehsil with that document and the existing record. Because joint family land and ancestral property rights can be complicated and differ by religion and family situation, it is best to take legal advice before acting. Confirm the mutation process at your tehsil office. This is general information, not legal advice.

In our family the elders did a registered family settlement so each branch got clear shares, then we did mutation. Without that written settlement the patwari kept all names as one joint khata.
