My name is spelt wrong in the land record. Aadhaar and other papers have the correct spelling but the khatauni has a mistake. How do I get it corrected?

A spelling or small clerical error in the name in the land record can usually be corrected without a long process, because it is treated as a correction of a clerical mistake, not a change of ownership. The general route is to apply to the revenue authority that maintains the record, usually the tehsildar or the patwari or lekhpal, with a simple application stating the wrong entry and the correct spelling, and attach proof of your correct name such as Aadhaar, voter ID, the registered deed, or earlier records that show the right spelling. The officer verifies it against the deed and supporting documents and passes a correction order, after which the record is updated. Some states allow this correction online or through a citizen service portal. A few points: small spelling fixes are simple, but if the change is large or affects who the owner is, it will be treated more strictly and may need a proper enquiry. Always carry the document that has the correct name and matches your deed. Confirm the application form and process at your tehsil office. This is general information, not legal advice.

I got my father's name corrected the same way. Took the registry paper and Aadhaar to the tehsil, gave an application, and the lekhpal corrected it after verification. No big fee.

Keep proof that the wrong name and the right name are the same person, otherwise they sometimes ask for an affidavit. I had to give one.
