Should I hire workers on daily wage or give the whole job to a contractor on per acre rate? What are the pros and cons for a normal farmer?

Both have a place, pick by the type of job. Daily wage (dihadi) suits small, variable or supervised tasks where you decide day by day what is done, but you carry the risk of slow work, idle time and rising rates at peak. Contract or per acre rate (theka) suits clear, measurable jobs like harvesting, transplanting or weeding a defined area, because the contractor brings the gang, manages them and you pay for the result not the hours, which protects you from delays and labour shortage at peak. The trade off with contract is that quality can suffer if the gang rushes, so fix the rate and the quality standard in advance and inspect the work. A common practical approach: use contractors for the big peak operations where you need speed and certainty, and daily wage for the smaller ongoing tasks. Whichever you choose, agree the rate, scope and payment timing clearly before work starts.

For paddy transplanting I always give theka per acre to a women's gang. They finish fast and I do not stand watching the clock. For odd jobs I still pay dihadi.

Contract harvesting saved my crop one year when rain was coming. The gang worked late to finish on the agreed rate. On daily wage they would have gone home at evening.
