A CHA (Customs House Agent), now formally called a Customs Broker, is a licensed agent who handles your customs clearance, files the shipping bill in the ICEGATE system, coordinates with the shipping line and the port, and helps with documentation. It is not legally compulsory to use one, you can self-clear, but for a new or small exporter a good CHA is practically essential because the customs and port procedures are complex and mistakes cause costly delays. The CHA charges a fee per shipment. Choose one experienced in agri exports and your specific commodity, and ask other exporters for a reliable name. Always check and keep copies of every document the CHA files on your behalf, because you remain responsible for the accuracy.

A good CHA is worth it. My first shipment cleared smoothly because the CHA knew the agri-specific paperwork and the quarantine steps. Ask fellow exporters for a trusted one.

Get the CHA fee in writing before the shipment. Some add charges later. And always keep copies of the shipping bill they file.
