Do I need a GI tag to export my produce?

My district has a famous variety. Some say a GI tag helps in export. Do I actually need a GI tag to be able to export.

No, a GI (Geographical Indication) tag is not required to export, you can export without it. A GI tag is a recognition that a product comes from a specific region and has a special quality linked to that place, like certain mangoes, rice or spices. What a GI does is help with branding, premium pricing, and protection against others misusing the name in export markets. To actually sell to a GI-tagged product's premium buyers, you usually need to be a registered authorised user under that GI. So think of GI as a marketing and price advantage, not an export license. The real export requirements remain your IEC, APEDA registration, quality and residue standards, and the documentation. Confirm GI authorised-user registration through the GI registry if you want to use the GI name.

We use our district GI on the label and buyers in the Gulf recognise it and pay a bit more. But yes, you must register as an authorised user, otherwise you cannot legally print the GI name.
