How Much Seed Do You Need?

Seed requirement = seed rate per acre x your area. This calculator fills in a typical seed rate for each crop, which you can edit. The right rate depends on your variety (hybrid vs open-pollinated), seed size, germination percentage, spacing and whether you broadcast, line-sow or transplant - so treat the default as a starting point and confirm with your seed dealer or KVK.

Tips for Getting the Plant Population Right

  • Buy certified seed from a licensed dealer and keep the bill - it germinates better and yields more than saved seed.
  • Treat seed before sowing to protect against soil-borne disease and early pests.
  • Adjust for germination: if germination is below 90%, increase the rate a little to hit your target plant stand.
  • See recommended varieties in our seed guide and the ideal window in the crop calendar.
💡 Note: Default seed rates are typical published figures and vary by region and method. Confirm the right rate for your variety with your KVK or seed supplier.
