A yellow V or inverted V starting at the leaf tip and running down the midrib of the lower, older leaves is the classic sign of nitrogen deficiency in maize, because the plant pulls mobile nitrogen to new growth. It often shows when a top dressing was missed, after heavy rain leached nitrogen, or in low organic carbon soil. For a standing crop, give a urea top dressing as a side band near the rows followed by light irrigation, or a foliar spray of about 2 percent urea (roughly 20 g per litre) for a quick interim lift. Make sure it is not waterlogging or root damage causing the symptom. Match the total nitrogen to your Soil Health Card recommendation and split it; consult your KVK and do not over apply.

Saw this exact V pattern after a wet spell washed my urea out. A side dressed urea dose plus irrigation greened it back in about a week.

When you side dress, place the urea in a band a few inches away from the plant base, not right on the stem, and cover it with soil before watering. I used to broadcast it on the surface and half of it just disappeared. Banding and covering made the same bag go much further.
