Rabi maize can give very high yields in Bihar with good irrigation and full management, often higher tonnage than wheat, and it is popular in your region, but it needs more water, balanced fertiliser including zinc, and a sure market since prices fluctuate. Compare your net return against wheat including drying and marketing cost, because maize harvested with high moisture needs proper drying to avoid a price cut. Use a notified rabi maize hybrid, sow in the recommended window, manage fall armyworm, and plan irrigation at knee-high, tasselling and grain-filling stages. Confirm hybrid choice and market options with your KVK.

Rabi maize gave me more tonnage than wheat on my irrigated land, but the drying after harvest is the real headache. The grain comes off with high moisture and if you cannot dry it well the trader cuts the rate hard. Sort out your drying space before you commit.

Do not skip the zinc on rabi maize. My first crop showed white striping and stunted plants from zinc shortage and the yield suffered. Once I added zinc as the soil test advised, the crop was much healthier. Maize is hungrier and thirstier than wheat, plan the inputs accordingly.

Watch for fall armyworm in the early whorl stage, it can hit rabi maize too. I scout the young plants and act early on the small larvae rather than waiting. Catching it in the whorl before it damages the growing point is far easier than later.
