Popcorn is a special type of maize with small, hard, round kernels that pop when heated, and you must grow dedicated popcorn hybrids, not ordinary grain maize, because normal maize does not pop well. Cultivation is broadly similar to grain maize for spacing, fertiliser and pest control, but isolate it from other maize so cross-pollination does not spoil popping quality, and harvest and dry carefully because popping depends on the right kernel moisture of roughly 13 to 14 percent. The market is snack and processing buyers, and it usually fetches a premium over grain maize but is more niche, so arrange a buyer or contract first. Isolation from my neighbour's normal maize and correct drying decided the popping. Without a buyer lined up it is risky to grow big.

In Karnataka I staggered my popcorn sowing by about three weeks from the neighbour's normal maize so the flowering did not overlap, since I could not get distance. That timing gap kept my popping quality clean.

One caution: I tested a small lot at home before selling and a batch that was dried too hard at very low moisture popped poorly. Storing it at the right moisture mattered as much as growing it, so check popping before you commit the lot.
