Little leaf is a phytoplasma disease that makes brinjal plants bushy with many small, soft, pale leaves, short internodes and no fruit, and it is spread by leafhoppers (jassids). There is no cure once a plant is infected, so the key is removing and destroying affected plants early so they do not act as a source. Manage the leafhopper vector and raise seedlings under insect net to keep the nursery clean. Avoid taking suckers or planting near old infected fields, and keep weeds down since they can host the vector. Confirm vector control measures and any resistant variety options with your KVK or district agriculture office.

In my village in Bihar little leaf wiped out part of a brinjal field and only removing the bushy plants fast stopped it. I learnt the hard way not to take suckers or seedlings from an old infected plot.

A point that helped me: keeping the field bunds and nearby weeds clean cut down the leafhoppers that carry it. Where I left weeds the little leaf plants showed up first.

A point I follow now: I raise brinjal seedlings under an insect net so the nursery stays clean of leafhoppers. Starting with healthy plants gave me far fewer little leaf cases later.
