Transplant brinjal at about 60 to 75 cm between rows and 45 to 60 cm between plants for normal types, giving wider spacing to spreading hybrids. Apply well rotted farmyard manure during land preparation. As a general guide, brinjal needs a balanced NPK schedule with full phosphorus and potash and part of the nitrogen as basal, and the remaining nitrogen split into two or three top dressings during growth and fruiting. Exact kg per acre depends on your soil test, variety and whether you fertigate through drip. Do not overdose nitrogen as it promotes soft growth and borer attack. Get a soil test and follow your state agricultural university or KVK recommendation for the precise dose for your district and variety.

The Soil Health Card recommendation surprised me because my soil already had enough phosphorus, so I cut that and saved money without any drop in yield. Get the card before you assume you need a full NPK dose.

Brinjal is a long duration crop, so splitting the nitrogen really matters. I top dress small amounts every few weeks through the picking season rather than dumping it all early. The plants keep flushing new flowers and I get a longer harvest.
