Is rabi maize better than kharif maize for yield and price?

Rabi (winter) maize generally gives higher and more stable yield than kharif maize because the cooler, drier season has more sunshine, fewer pests and diseases like fall armyworm and stalk rots, and no waterlogging, but it needs assured irrigation. Kharif maize is rainfed or partly irrigated, cheaper to grow, but faces more pest and disease pressure and weather risk. Rabi maize in states like Bihar can reach high yields with good hybrids and proper nitrogen and irrigation. On price, both follow feed, starch and ethanol demand and often trade below MSP, so storage and timing of sale matter. Choose rabi maize if you have winter irrigation, and use it as a profitable crop in the rice fallow.

My rabi maize yields clearly beat kharif because of less pest trouble. Without irrigation though, kharif is the only option.

In Telangana I take rabi maize after paddy because the field is free and the cool weather gives big cobs with hardly any fall armyworm. The only cost is the winter irrigations, which my borewell can manage.
