makka MSP versus market price private sale poultry starch procurement

Maize often sells below MSP in open mandis because government procurement of maize is limited and most maize is bought by private buyers for poultry feed, starch and ethanol, so rates follow that demand. To get a better price, dry the grain well to reduce moisture and avoid quality cuts, sell when feed and starch demand is strong, and explore selling through an FPO that can bargain in bulk or supply directly to feed and starch units. Watch for any state procurement or bonus announcements and register if your state procures maize. Storing dry grain to sell in the lean season, instead of dumping at harvest when prices are lowest, can also improve returns. Check current rates on eNAM and nearby mandis before selling.

Direct sale to a poultry feed buyer through our group got more than the local mandi. Moisture below the limit avoided cuts.

In Karnataka I checked rates on eNAM and in two nearby mandis before deciding, and the gap was big enough to cover the extra transport to the better mandi. Comparing before loading paid off more than once.

One caution: do not all sell at harvest. The whole village dumped maize together and the rate crashed. The year I dried well and held a couple of months for the lean season, I got a clearly better price.

In Telangana our FPO aggregated maize from many small farmers and supplied a starch unit directly, cutting out the trader margin. Selling in bulk as a group got us a better rate than any of us could get alone.
