Ridge gourd (turai) is a warm season cucurbit grown in two main windows, a summer crop sown from January to February and a rainy season crop sown from June to July. It is frost sensitive, so avoid the cold months in the plains. Sow seed in pits or along lines, with two to three seeds per spot, and keep wide spacing since the vines spread, around 1.5 to 2 metres between rows. Growing on a trellis or pandal keeps the fruit clean, straight and free of rot and makes picking easier than letting vines run on the ground. Soak seed before sowing for faster germination. The crop starts picking in a couple of months. Confirm the recommended variety and exact window for your area with the local horticulture office.

Trellis is the trick for turai, the fruit hangs straight and clean and you can pick easily. On the ground they curve and rot where they touch wet soil. Two seasons work here, summer and the rains.

Soaking the seed overnight before sowing gave me much faster and more even germination. Wide spacing because these vines really spread out.
