Jute is usually sown from March to May depending on the type and your region, with capsularis types sown earlier and olitorius types a little later as temperatures rise. Early sowing helps the fibre crop get a long growing period before the heavy monsoon. Use line sowing where possible as it makes weeding and thinning easier than broadcasting, which is still common in many Bengal villages. Thinning at the right stage decides plant stand and fibre quality. Seed rate differs between line and broadcast sowing, so follow the rate your KVK recommends for your method. Confirm the exact sowing window for your block with the local agriculture office.

In Nadia we mostly broadcast but the line sown plots my neighbour keeps give cleaner fibre and easier weeding. The thinning labour is the real headache, plan for it.
