I want to start mulberry silk rearing. How much mulberry area do I need to keep rearing going, and what infrastructure is required to begin?

Mulberry sericulture has two parts: growing mulberry (the leaf is the only food for the silkworm) and rearing silkworms for cocoons. You need enough mulberry to feed each rearing batch, so even a part of an acre of well-grown irrigated mulberry can support regular rearing batches if leaf yield is good. To begin you need a clean rearing space or house, rearing trays or a shoot-rearing setup, disinfection (very important for disease control), and good quality disease-free layings (silkworm eggs) from an authorised source. Ramanagara is a major silk belt, so you have good support nearby. The Central Silk Board and the state sericulture department provide training, layings and technical help and there are schemes for sericulture. Start with the recommended mulberry variety and get hands-on training from the department before your first batch.
Disinfection of the rearing room is the thing beginners ignore and then lose a batch to disease. In Ramanagara the department helped me with training and layings. Get good leaf first, weak mulberry means weak worms.
Chawki (young worm) rearing is delicate. Many of us buy chawki-reared worms from a centre and only do the later stage. It cut my losses a lot when starting out.
