Is there real market demand for quinoa or is it just hype for sellers?

Many agents push quinoa as the next big thing. Is the demand genuine or am I being set up to grow something nobody will buy?

Be honest with yourself here. Quinoa demand in India is real but niche. It is bought mainly by health conscious urban consumers, gym and diet users, hotels and some export and processor buyers. That is a small slice of the total food market, not a mass demand like wheat or rice. When the trend started, prices were high and supply was small. As many farmers and importers jumped in, supply rose and prices fell, and several growers were left without buyers. So the safe rule is simple. Do not grow quinoa on speculation. Either have a signed contract with a processor or exporter, or sell through an FPO that already has buyers, or keep it to a tiny trial plot. The people pushing it hardest are often selling seed, not buying your grain.

This is the most useful warning on this whole page. I grew it on the agent promise and then he vanished at harvest. No buyer, price crashed. Contract first or do not bother.

Through our FPO it worked because we had a buyer tied up. Solo it is risky.

I add to this. The first year the rate was great, by the third year so many people grew it locally that the same buyer offered me almost half. Niche means small, and small markets fill up fast.

Do not quit your bread crop for quinoa. Keep it a side experiment on a corner of land until you have a buyer who pays on time.
