I keep reading quinoa is a high value crop. Can it actually be grown in India and in which season and climate does it do well?

Quinoa is a cool weather crop that needs day temperatures roughly between 15 and 30 degrees and dislikes high humidity and heat at flowering. In India it has done best as a rabi or winter crop in semi arid areas of Rajasthan, parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and the hills. It tolerates poor and slightly saline soils and low water, which is why it suits dryland farmers. The problems start when temperatures cross 32 to 35 degrees during grain fill or when there is rain at maturity, both cause poor seed set and sprouting. Treat it as a niche experimental crop first. Grow a small plot of half an acre, confirm a buyer before you scale, and check suitability with your nearest KVK or state agriculture university because there is no government MSP or assured procurement for quinoa.
I tried it on one acre in Rajasthan rabi season. The plant grew fine in cool weather but a late unseasonal shower near harvest spoiled part of the crop because the grain started sprouting on the head. Keep your harvest window away from any rain risk.
Works in our area near Bangalore as a winter crop but summer heat is a no. Demand was the real headache, not growing it.
