I want a clear, honest idea of what a cherry orchard costs to set up and what returns to expect, given how risky the crop is with frost and cracking. Ranges are fine.

Cherry can be one of the highest value temperate fruits per kilo because it is a premium early fruit with limited Indian supply, but the income is volatile and the setup is demanding. Costs per acre include grafted plants on suitable rootstock plus pollinizers, support and training system, drip irrigation, bird netting (often necessary), and in rain-prone sites rain covers, which together make establishment a significant investment that varies widely by altitude and whether you add covers and netting. The tree takes a few years to bear and reaches good yield around year 5 to 7. In a good year with no frost or rain damage, the premium price can give strong returns and good payback, but a single bad frost or a rain event at harvest can wipe out much of a year's crop, so net income averaged over years is far more modest than the best-year stories suggest. Plant only at a suitable high, frost-safe site, budget for protection, use crop insurance where available, and check current local cherry rates and input costs before investing. Treat it as a high-reward, high-risk crop, not a guaranteed earner.
Good years cherry pays better than apple per kg. But I have had years where frost or rain took most of it. Do not bank on the same income every year.
Bird netting is a must here or birds take a big share. Add that and rain protection to your budget, it is not optional in many sites.
Site selection saved me. My higher, well-drained block that drains cold air gets frost-damaged far less than the lower one. Do not plant cherry in a frost pocket whatever the income story.
Pollinizer variety and bees are essential or set is poor and the whole investment underperforms. I learnt that the hard way in my first planting.
