Climate
Sweet potato is a warm-season crop preferring 21 to 27 degrees Celsius with adequate sunshine and 75 to 150 cm of well-distributed rainfall. It is fairly drought tolerant once established and does not suit frost. It is grown in kharif and rabi in different regions and can fit into rice fallows and rainfed areas, which adds to its appeal as a low-risk crop.
Soil
Well-drained sandy loam or loam with good organic matter and a permeable subsoil gives the best tuberous roots, with pH 5.5 to 6.8. Loose friable soil lets roots expand. Leaf-feeding caterpillars are minor by comparison.

Harvest at 90 to 120 days when leaves start yellowing and roots reach size; early varieties finish in 90 to 100 days. Dig carefully to avoid cuts that invite rot, then cure in warm shade for a few days to heal skins and improve storage and sweetness.
