Marigold usually starts flowering about 60 to 75 days after transplanting depending on variety and weather, so count back from the festival date and transplant accordingly to hit Dussehra and Diwali when loose flower rates peak. African marigold takes a bit longer to flower than French marigold, so pick the type and variety to match your target window. Raise the nursery a few weeks before transplanting, and pinch the plants once early to get more branches and flushes. Stagger your planting in two or three lots a week apart so you are not depending on a single flowering day and can supply through the festival period. Confirm the days to flowering for your chosen variety and season with your seed dealer or KVK.

Pinching the top once when the plant is small gave me many more branches and far more flowers. I also plant in two batches a week apart so I always have fresh flowers right through the festival days.

Count back from the festival date and add a few buffer days, because a cool or cloudy spell can delay flowering a little. The year I planted with no buffer the flowers opened just after the peak rate had passed.

Know your type, African genda took clearly longer to flower than the French type in my field. If you pick the wrong type for your window you can miss the festival. Ask the dealer for the days to flowering of that exact variety.
