Fig is a deciduous fruit suited to the warm dry climate around Pune, and the Poona fig is the main commercial type grown there. Plant healthy cuttings or rooted plants at moderate spacing, train to a low open frame, and prune annually because fig fruits on new growth, so pruning stimulates fresh fruiting wood and keeps the bush at a pickable height. Drip irrigation with balanced fertigation supports steady cropping, and crop regulation through pruning and water management helps target the better season. Avoid waterlogging since fig prefers well-drained soil. For the exact spacing, pruning intensity, and crop regulation schedule for your area, confirm with your local KVK or horticulture department.

Because fig fruits on new growth, the annual pruning is really setting up your crop, not just shaping the plant. We prune to push fresh shoots and time it so the crop comes in the season the market pays best. The first year we pruned too lightly and got a lot of old wood and little fruit, so do not be shy with the pruning.

We keep the bush trained low and open near Saswad so picking is easy and the inside gets light and air, which also keeps the fruit clean. A tall unmanaged fig is a nightmare to harvest and the inside fruit gets poor. Drip with the recommended feed gave us steadier cropping than the old flood watering.

Crop regulation through water management helped us target the better-priced season, by giving the plant a controlled stress and then reviving with water and feed, similar to how we handle other fruit here. Avoid waterlogging at all costs, our patch with poor drainage gave weak plants and root problems. Get the pruning intensity and the regulation timing for your soil from the KVK, copying another area's schedule did not work for us.

Because fig fruits on new growth we prune fairly hard each year to push fresh shoots, and the season we pruned timidly we got old wood and little fruit. The annual pruning is really setting up the crop, not just shaping the bush. Get the pruning intensity for your soil from the KVK because it varies.
