On plastic mulch our fruit stayed clean and the crop came about a week earlier than the bare-soil plot next door. Worth the cost for the early market.

The bees made or broke our crop near Kota. The year we sprayed insecticide in the morning at full flowering, fruit set was poor and the melons came lopsided. Now we spray only in the late evening when the bees are not active, and we keep a few hives at the edge of the field during flowering, which improved set noticeably.
