You can cut pod borer pressure and sprays by using pheromone traps for monitoring and mass trapping, putting up bird perches so insectivorous birds eat the larvae, and spraying an NPV bio-pesticide or neem-based product at early larval stage before resorting to chemicals. Scout regularly and act on the economic threshold rather than spraying on a fixed calendar. When chemical control is truly needed, use a recommended insecticide and rotate modes of action, following the label dose and pre-harvest interval. Trap numbers per acre and product choice should be confirmed with your KVK.

Bird perches and pheromone traps reduced my spraying to just one or two well-timed sprays. The birds really clear the small larvae.

The pheromone traps are most useful as an early warning for me. When the catch in the traps suddenly jumps, I know the moths are active and I scout closely for tiny larvae and time my one bio-spray then. Without the traps I used to spray too early or too late.
