North East Sikkim organic farming certification MOVCDNER scheme benefit

North-East farmers benefit from a dedicated organic value chain mission for the region that supports certified organic production and market linkage. The Mission Organic Value Chain Development for the North Eastern Region helps farmers form groups or FPOs, get organic certification, and connect to processing and buyers for crops like large cardamom, ginger, turmeric, buckwheat and vegetables. Sikkim is already a fully organic state, so the focus is on certification, branding, packaging and reaching premium markets outside the region. Support can include inputs, on and off farm infrastructure, collection and processing units, and handholding to maintain organic standards and records. Farmers usually join through a registered grower group or FPO since certification is done on a group basis. Contact your state horticulture or agriculture department and the mission implementing agency to enrol your group and learn current support norms before applying.
We grow large cardamom and ginger organically and joined a grower group for certification. The group certification is cheaper than doing it alone. Keeping the record diary for inputs is strict, do not skip it or certification fails. Better packaging fetched us higher rates.
Being in an organic state helps but the real money is in selling outside the region with proper branding. Through the mission group we reached buyers in bigger cities. Maintain the organic standards honestly, surprise checks happen. Turmeric and ginger gave us good returns.
The premium is real only when you reach the right buyer, in the local market organic and normal sell at almost the same price. The processing unit our group got helped us make dried ginger and value added cardamom that sold far better. Plan the market side before expecting a higher price.
