For a small or terraced hill farm, a power tiller is often better than a tractor because it is compact, manoeuvrable on narrow terraces and far cheaper to buy and run. It handles ploughing, puddling and light tillage on small plots where a full tractor cannot turn or reach, and with attachments it can pump, thresh or haul small loads. A tractor makes sense only where you have enough contiguous, accessible land to justify its size and cost. Match the power tiller to your soil and slope, and confirm local spares and service. For scattered small hill plots, the power tiller usually gives better value and access than a tractor.

On my terraced plots a tractor simply cannot turn. The power tiller works every narrow field and even drives a small thresher. For hill farming it is the practical machine.

It is cheaper to buy and the diesel use is low. I use mine for ploughing and to haul small loads up the path. A tractor would have been wasted money on my land.

One caution: a power tiller is hard physical work to handle on steep slopes, more tiring than people expect, and needs care to avoid it slipping. Check there is a mechanic and spares nearby in the hills before buying, getting parts up here can take time.
