Both save water over flood, but the right choice depends on your crop and spacing. Drip is best for wide spaced and row crops like cotton, chilli, vegetables, banana, sugarcane and orchards because it delivers water drop by drop right at the roots, giving the highest water saving and allowing fertigation. Sprinkler suits close spaced and broadcast crops like groundnut, wheat, pulses, bajra and vegetables sown densely where you need to cover the whole field. In very windy areas sprinkler loses water to evaporation and drift, so drip is steadier. Both qualify for subsidy under PMKSY Per Drop More Crop, roughly 55 percent for small and marginal farmers and 45 percent for others, with some state top up. Match the system to your crop and get a proper design.

For my groundnut sprinkler works great because it is a close crop. For chilli I use drip. Using the wrong one wastes water and money.

In Anantapur wind is strong. My sprinkler water was blowing away in summer afternoons, so I run it early morning. For row crops drip is just better here.
