There is no single correct depth because it depends entirely on local geology and the water table, so a hydrogeological survey before drilling matters more than going deeper. Get the groundwater department or a qualified geophysicist to do a resistivity survey to locate fracture zones rather than relying only on water diviners. Drilling beside an existing good well, near tanks or low lying recharge areas improves your odds. Going extremely deep in hard rock often hits no extra fractures and just costs more. Whatever depth you reach, install a recharge structure so the bore keeps yielding. Many blocks are notified as over exploited and need permission, so check rules with the groundwater authority before you start.
I spent on a resistivity survey before drilling and got water at decent depth. My uncle trusted only the coconut diviner and his first two bores failed. Survey is worth the money.
Deeper is not always better. In our hard rock area going past 600 feet rarely helps if there is no fracture. The point machine readings matter.
Get the agreement with the rig owner clear before they start, on rate per foot and casing. Some quote low then add charges. Also keep the survey report, you may need it for the groundwater permission.
Drilling next to an existing good well in the area improved my odds a lot. The same fracture zone usually carries across, so I did not gamble on a fresh isolated spot. Ask neighbours which spots gave water and which failed before you fix the point.
