Foxtail millet, called kangni or korra, is a short duration drought hardy small millet ideal for dryland, often maturing in about 70 to 90 days. Sow with the onset of monsoon in June or July at a seed rate of about 3 to 4 kg per acre in lines about 22 to 25 cm apart, thinning to keep plants about 8 to 10 cm apart. It needs little fertiliser, responding to a modest dose of nitrogen and phosphorus, and tolerates poor soils. Its short duration lets it escape terminal drought and fit into intercropping with pulses. Demand for foxtail millet has grown with the millet promotion, improving prices for clean graded grain. Korra is very easy on my dry land. It finishes fast and needs little input. After the millet awareness push the rate for clean korra has improved a lot in our market.

I intercrop foxtail millet with redgram. Even if one fails I get something from the other. Weeding early is important because it grows slow at first.

The seed is very small so do not sow deep, just a light cover, or it will not come up well. Mixing the seed with some dry sand helps spread it evenly in the line. I learned this after a patchy first crop.

Selling raw korra is hard because it needs dehulling before people eat it. Our group got it cleaned and dehulled at a small unit and the price was much better. Tie up with a processing unit or FPO before you grow a big area.
