Quick wilt, also called foot rot, is caused by Phytophthora and is the most serious threat to black pepper, killing vines fast during the monsoon when soil stays wet. Manage it with good drainage so water does not stagnate at the base, and avoid wounding roots and collar. Apply Trichoderma enriched compost around the base, and as a preventive drench the soil and spray the foliage with a copper or metalaxyl mancozeb based fungicide before and during the monsoon as per recommendation. Remove and destroy dead and severely affected vines with the root mass to stop spread. Provide a live standard and keep the basin clean. Plant tolerant varieties where available and confirm the current schedule with your KVK or the Spices Board.

Drainage saved my pepper in Kodagu. The vines on the wet low spots died first. I cut drains across the slope and the quick wilt loss dropped a lot. Pre monsoon copper spray also helps.

I add Trichoderma compost to every pit and around old vines. Along with the pre monsoon drench it keeps the foot rot down. Once a vine collapses fully, remove it with roots so it does not infect the next one.

Timing the drench before the heavy rain start matters more than spraying after the vines already wilt. By the time you see sudden yellowing the root and collar are often already rotten. Preventive pre monsoon and a follow up during a break in the rain worked better for me than reacting late.
