Njallani, also called Green Gold, is the most productive small cardamom selection in Kerala and is hugely popular in Idukki for its large bold capsules and very high panicle and capsule count compared to ordinary types. Released improved varieties from the spices research institute are also good and may suit your specific elevation. Cardamom grows best at 600 to 1200 m with annual rainfall of 1500 to 4000 mm and partial shade. For high density Njallani, spacing around 2 m by 2 m is used, while traditional types are wider at about 2.5 m by 2.5 m. Plants start bearing about two years after planting. Choose planting material from a reliable nursery and confirm the best variety for your elevation with the Spices Board.

Njallani is the king in Idukki, the capsules are big and bold. But it needs good care, irrigation in dry months and the right shade. Where I let shade get too heavy the yield dropped.

Buy clean planting material from a known nursery, virus infected suckers will ruin a new field. I lost time and money on cheap suckers once, now I only take certified planting stock.

Njallani is thirsty in the dry months, so do not plant it without a water source. My block near the stream did far better than the dry slope block in the same year. Plan irrigation before you plant.

Different selections suit different elevations, so do not just copy what worked for someone higher or lower than you. I took the Spices Board advice for my elevation and the variety performed much better than the popular name everyone pushes.
