HF (Holstein Friesian) crossbred cows generally give more milk volume than Jersey crossbreds, but Jersey milk has higher fat, so it can fetch a better rate where payment is fat-based. HF crossbreds need more feed and are a bit more sensitive to heat, while Jersey crossbreds are smaller, eat less, tolerate heat better and adapt well to many Indian conditions. For high total milk and if you can manage feeding and cooling, choose HF crossbred; for moderate yield with lower feed cost, higher fat and easier management, choose Jersey crossbred. In Karnataka's climate many farmers prefer Jersey crosses. Whatever you pick, buy from a reliable source with milk records and get a vet check before purchase.

I keep Jersey crosses. They eat less, handle our heat well and the milk fat is good so the dairy pays a fair rate. My friend with HF gets more litres but his feed bill is also much higher.

Find out how your local dairy pays before choosing. Ours pays largely on fat and SNF, so Jersey milk earns me more per litre than the volume alone suggests. If your buyer pays flat per litre, HF volume may suit better.

The smaller Jersey cross is easier for my family to handle and manages on our limited fodder. HF needs more feed and care to truly give its higher yield. For a small farm with tight feed, the Jersey cross was the practical pick for me.

Whichever you buy, do not skip the vet check and milk records. I once bought a cheap HF cross without records and she turned out a poor milker with old udder trouble. A small inspection fee would have saved a costly mistake.

I keep a few of each. The HF crosses carry my volume and the Jersey crosses ride out the summer and tough months when the HF dip. Mixing the two evened out my milk across the year instead of betting everything on one breed.
