DAP is in short supply at my shop. Can I run my crop using urea and SSP together, or a complex fertiliser, to get the same nutrition? How do I match it?
Yes, DAP is not the only way to supply phosphorus. You can meet the same nutrients using other products as long as you match the nitrogen and phosphorus the crop needs. Two common substitutes: use SSP for phosphorus (it also adds sulphur) along with urea for nitrogen; or use a suitable NPK complex that supplies phosphorus plus nitrogen. The key is to work out the phosphorus and nitrogen quantities your crop needs and then choose the combination of products that supplies them, remembering each product has a different nutrient percentage, so the bag quantity will differ from DAP. SSP supplies less phosphorus per bag than DAP, so you will need a larger quantity of SSP to match the same phosphorus, plus separate urea for nitrogen. Because the conversion has a few steps, ask your KVK or block agriculture officer to give you the exact substitute quantities for your crop. Base everything on your Soil Health Card or soil test and do not over-apply.
Last year when DAP was short I used SSP plus urea and the crop was fine. Just needed more bags of SSP for the same phosphorus.
A complex at sowing also worked for me when DAP was not available. Do not panic, there are alternatives.
