Everyone warns that yield falls in the first two or three years of going organic. Is there any scheme support to survive that conversion period or am I on my own?
There is some support but be realistic, no scheme fully replaces the income dip during conversion. Under PKVY and NMNF the cluster assistance is spread across the conversion years and is meant partly to cushion this period through input support, training and certification cost, so you are not paying those costs out of pocket while your yields recover. However, the assistance does not guarantee your income, it offsets some costs. The honest planning approach is to convert in stages, shift only part of your land to organic at first so the rest keeps earning, build your soil with green manure, compost and good crop rotation to shorten the yield dip, and line up a buyer who will pay extra before you finish conversion. Also keep your records clean so your conversion period and any past chemical free years are properly counted, which shortens the time to full organic status and to a premium market. Confirm what specific transition support your state offers under PKVY or its own organic policy with your agriculture department, since some states add their own top up for conversion.
Staging it was the only thing that saved me. I kept half on normal farming for income while the other half went organic. By the time the organic half stabilised I shifted more. Do not convert everything at once.
Heavy compost and dhaincha green manure cut my conversion yield drop a lot. The soil that has been chemical fed for years needs feeding back before it performs organically.
