What is the difference between a grid-based scheme sample and a sample from my own field?

Good question, and it helps to understand both. Under the Soil Health Card scheme, samples are often collected on a grid across a village or cluster, so one sample may represent a small block of farms with broadly similar soil. The card you receive is based on that grid sample for your area, which is reliable for the general fertiliser plan, because nearby fields on the same soil type usually behave similarly. However, if your specific plot is clearly different from the neighbourhood, for example a low salty patch, a very sandy strip, a newly levelled field, or land you suspect has a particular deficiency, then a sample taken from your exact field gives a sharper picture. In that case you can collect a proper composite sample from your own plot and get it tested through the lab or a private lab. For most farmers the grid-based scheme card is enough to plan fertiliser and save money, and you only need a dedicated own-field test when your plot stands out or you are chasing a specific problem. Whichever you use, the sample must be collected correctly, and you should follow the recommendation with your local KVK and not over-apply.
