Snake gourd (chichinda, padwal) is a warm season cucurbit grown mainly in the rainy season sown from June to July and a summer crop sown from December to January in warm areas. It is a vigorous climber that must be grown on a strong trellis or pandal, because the long hanging fruit needs to grow straight and clean off the ground, and growers often tie a small weight to the fruit tip so it hangs straight rather than curling. Sow two to three seeds per pit with wide spacing of around 1.5 to 2 metres. Soak seed before sowing for faster germination. Pick fruit young and tender. Confirm the recommended variety and exact window for your area with the local horticulture office.

Chichinda must go on a pandal, the long fruit has to hang straight. I tie a little stone to the fruit tip so it does not curl, the straight ones sell better. Pick young and tender.

Strong pandal because the vine is heavy and runs a lot. Soaking the seed overnight gave faster germination. It grows well through the rains here in Kerala.
