Ash gourd (petha, kumhda) is a warm season cucurbit grown mainly in the rainy season sown from June to July, and also in a summer crop sown from December to January in warmer areas. It is a vigorous, long running vine that produces large fruits, so give it wide spacing of around 2 to 3 metres, sowing two to three seeds per pit. It is usually grown on the ground with the fruit resting on dry mulch or straw to prevent rot, or on a strong pandal. The big advantage of ash gourd is that the mature fruit, with its waxy white coating, stores for many months without a cold store, which lets you sell over time.
