Pointed gourd (parwal) is a perennial cucurbit usually propagated by vine cuttings or root suckers rather than seed, because seed gives a slow, variable crop and produces many unwanted male plants. Plant cuttings in the warm season, commonly around October to November or February to March depending on the region, on raised beds or ridges with good drainage, as parwal hates waterlogging. Since parwal has separate male and female plants, you must plant mostly female (fruiting) vines along with a small number of male vines for pollination, which is why vegetative propagation from known plants is preferred. Train the vines on a low bower or trellis. Once established it fruits for several years. Confirm the recommended planting material and ratio of male to female plants with your KVK.

Use vine cuttings from good female plants, not seed, otherwise you get a lot of useless male plants. Keep a few male vines in the plot for pollination. Raised beds because parwal dies in standing water.

Once parwal is established it gives fruit for years, so it is a good long term plot. Good drainage is the main thing in our Bihar low land, the waterlogged corners always failed.
