Horse gram (kulthi) is a low yielding pulse, giving only a few quintals per acre, but its strength is that it grows on poor dryland with almost no inputs where other crops fail, so the return relative to cost can still be worthwhile. Demand has grown because horse gram is promoted as a healthy high protein food, and value added products fetch a better rate than raw grain. Prices are modest but steady. It also gives fodder and improves the soil. For a marginal dryland farmer it is a low risk crop rather than a high income one. Check the current local rate and any health food or FPO buyers, and ask your KVK for realistic yields before deciding.

Kulthi will never make you rich but it gives something on land that would otherwise be bare. The health food demand has helped the rate a bit. I also use the crop residue as fodder.
