When and how do I plant a tamarind (imli) tree for good fruiting?

Tamarind (imli) is a hardy long lived tree best planted at the start of the monsoon, around June to August, so saplings establish with rain. Use grafted or budded plants of an improved variety such as PKM 1 rather than seedlings, because grafted trees start bearing much earlier and give uniform good quality pulp, while seedlings take far longer and vary in fruit. Space the trees widely since they grow large, and intercrop in the early years while the canopy is small. Make good pits with well rotted manure.
