Tamarind (imli) is a hardy long lived tree best planted at the start of the monsoon, around June to August, so saplings establish with rain. Use grafted or budded plants of an improved variety such as PKM 1 rather than seedlings, because grafted trees start bearing much earlier and give uniform good quality pulp, while seedlings take far longer and vary in fruit. Space the trees widely since they grow large, and intercrop in the early years while the canopy is small. Make good pits with well rotted manure. Grafted tamarind comes into bearing in a few years versus many more for seedlings. Confirm the recommended grafted variety and spacing for your area with your KVK or horticulture office.

Go for grafted PKM 1 type, not seedling imli. My grandfather's seedling trees took ages to fruit. The grafted ones bear far earlier and the pulp is uniform, which traders like.

They grow huge, so give them wide spacing and use the gap for intercrops in the early years. Plant at monsoon onset and they settle on their own.
