I am confused between keeping the Italian bee (Apis mellifera) and the Indian bee (Apis cerana). Which is better for commercial honey and which suits a beginner?

Apis mellifera (the Italian or European honey bee) is the main species for commercial honey in the Indian plains because it builds large colonies, gives higher honey yield and takes well to migration, which is why most large beekeepers use it. Apis cerana (the Indian hive bee) gives less honey but is hardy, suits hill and local conditions, is less demanding, and is a good choice for hill areas and smaller or beginner beekeepers, and it absconds more readily. For commercial honey at scale in accessible areas, mellifera is usually preferred; for the hills and a lower-investment start, cerana is sensible. Either way, get trained, buy healthy colonies from a reliable source, and follow expert guidance on pests and disease. Confirm which species is recommended and available for your area with your KVK or State Bee Board.

In the Mandi hills the Indian bee suits our conditions and needs less fuss, though it gives less honey. Friends down in the plains run mellifera for bigger yields. Match the bee to your place.
