Aquaponics combines fish farming with soilless plant growing, where fish waste feeds the plants and the plants clean the water, so you are running two biological systems linked together. A setup needs fish tanks, a biofilter, grow beds or rafts or NFT channels for the plants, pumps, aeration, and usually a protected structure, which makes the cost moderate to high, often comparable to or above a hydroponic setup of similar size depending on scale and automation. It is more complex than hydroponics alone because you must keep both fish and plants healthy at the same time, balancing fish stocking, feeding, water quality and the bacteria that convert the waste. Power reliability is critical since the fish need continuous aeration and water flow. It appeals to people because it integrates fish and vegetable income and uses water efficiently, but the dual complexity raises the skill bar and failure risk. Get itemised quotes, plan reliable backup power, and learn the system at a working farm first. Check with your state horticulture or fisheries department for any applicable support and costs.

Running two living systems at once is the real challenge. When my fish were stressed the plants suffered too, and the other way round. It is a balancing act.

Aeration backup is non-negotiable. A power cut without backup can kill your fish fast, and then the whole system is down. Spend on that first.
