Which intercrops can I grow in a young teak plantation during the gestation years?

In the first three to four years a young teak plantation still lets in plenty of light, so you can intercrop short duration crops like pulses, groundnut, vegetables, turmeric, ginger or fodder between the rows to earn during the long gestation. Once the teak canopy closes, light reduces sharply and intercropping becomes hard, so plan cash crops for the early window only. Keep the intercrop away from the base of the trees and do not let it compete for water in dry months. Choose intercrops based on your soil, water and local market. After canopy closure, the plantation mostly just grows, with thinnings giving some intermediate income.
