Panama wilt is a soil-borne fungal disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense that blocks the plant's water-conducting tissue, causing yellowing of older leaves, splitting of the pseudostem base, and reddish-brown discoloration inside the stem. There is no reliable cure once a plant is infected, so management is preventive. Use only certified disease-free tissue culture plants, avoid fields with a history of wilt, ensure good drainage, and never move soil or suckers from infected fields. Promptly uproot and destroy affected plants and avoid replanting banana repeatedly in the same heavily infected plot. The TR4 strain is a serious quarantine concern. Report suspected TR4 to your state horticulture department and follow their containment advice.

The disease moves on soil and water, so we made simple footbaths at the field gate and clean tools between blocks. It sounds fussy but once wilt enters a plot it stays for years, so keeping it out is far cheaper than fighting it.

In my experience drainage is the biggest practical lever a farmer controls. The low wet corners of my field showed wilt first. After I raised the beds and fixed the drainage the spread slowed a lot, though it never fully went away.

We rotated the worst plot out of banana into a non-host crop for a couple of years on KVK advice before going back. It is not a cure but it reduced the pressure. Replanting banana again and again in the same infected soil only made it worse for my neighbour.

Please take the TR4 warning seriously. If you see wilt symptoms in a Cavendish type like G9, which older strains usually spared, report it rather than just pulling plants quietly. Early reporting helps the whole area contain it. Our department asked us not to share suckers from the suspect field at all.

One thing that helped our group was buying tissue culture plants only from an accredited lab and keeping the invoice. If a question of disease-free material ever comes up, you have proof of source. Cheap unverified suckers are how wilt arrived in our village.
